FG to equip Lagos, Kano, Abuja airports with N12bn firetrucks

Recently purchased N12 billion fire fighting trucks would be sent to the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, and Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano by the Federal Government.

Sen. Hadi Sirika, Minister of Aviation, announced this as he handed the eight firefighting trucks to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria’s Aeronautical Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (FAAN).

According to Sirika, important safety equipment must be made available to avoid accidents from happening again.

He stated that to promote flight operations safety and security, attention has been given to infrastructure restoration and improvement, capacity building, and workforce development.

“The Lion Volkan 6×6 Brand, Major Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Vehicles (MFFV) carries 14,000 litres of water,  1,700 litres of foam, 250kg powder capacity each.

“The equipment has an acceleration rate of 0-80km per hour in 30 seconds as each of the trucks possesses the limitless capacity to discharge while in motion and they are also equipped with under chassis nozzles to tackle running fuel fire.

“It monitors the discharge rate of between 6,000 litres to 10,000 litres per minute and they will be deployed to the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano,” he said.

Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, the managing director of FAAN, had earlier remarked that a thorough training programme had been set up for the mechanical department and vehicle users.

The training, he said, was to make sure that the cars were kept properly.

In addition, he disclosed that the federal government had sent eleven ambulances, two trucks for reaction commanders, and aircraft removal and recovery equipment to several airports around the nation.

“We are promising airport users that FAAN will continue to prioritise safety and security at the nation’s airports.
“I also want to charge the air rescue and fire Ffghting gepartment to make the best use of the newly commissioned equipment,” he said.

He reaffirmed FAAN’s dedication to her key principles of security, comfort, and safety.
