Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu of Nigeria has been named as the new Secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelisation, as part of the Section for First Evangelisation and the New Particular Churches.
The Holy See News Office made the papal appointment announcement on Wednesday.
Archbishop Nwachukwu, the titular Archbishop of Acquaviva, has served as the Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations and Specialised Organisations in Geneva, as well as the World Trade Organisation, since December 17, 2021.
He was also the Holy See’s Representative to the International Organisation for Migration.
Brief biography
Archbishop Nwachukwu was born on May 10, 1960, in Nigeria, and was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Umuahia on June 17, 1984, before being incardinated into the Diocese of Aba on April 2, 1990.
In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI named him Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua and Titular Archbishop of Acquaviva.
He later served as the Apostolic Nuncio to Trinidad and Tobago, as well as Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent & Grenadines, and Guyana, beginning in 2017.
In 2018, Archbishop Nwachukwu was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Saint Lucia, Grenada, the Bahamas, Suriname, and Belize.
