It was a day of double celebration on Thursday for Deacon Dr. Olatunji Kolade Belo (popularly called Deacon OK Belo), who celebrated his 80th birthday and the end of tenure as Chairman, Governing Council, Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary (NBTS), Ogbomosho.
To mark the celebrations, a joint 80th birthday thanksgiving and appreciation service by NBTS was held at Good News Baptist Church, Surulere, Lagos.
The occasion drew many notable persons including the leadership of the Baptist community led by the President, Nigerian Baptist Convention, Reverend Dr. Israel Adelani Akanji, President, NBTS, Reverend Prof. Emiola Nihinlola and Mr. Moyo Jacobs Ajekigbe, one-time MD, First Bank, and former Chairman, Governing Council, NBTS, Ogbomosho.
In his message on the occasion, Release and Releases, Reverend Dr Israel Akanji, citing Psalms 134, commended the celebrant for his fruitful years of service to the Baptist community, especially the NBTS, and the advancement of the gospel in general. He added that Deacon Belo would be thoroughly blessed.
Reverend Dr. Kayode Ilupeju, host pastor, Good News Baptist Church, in his tribute to the celebrant, mentioned the numerous contributions of Deacon OK Belo, who, he said, was instrumental to the development of most of the infrastructure of the local church.
“We thank God for the good health that Deacon Belo enjoys. At 80 years of age, he is still very strong, agile and active.
“But Deacon Belo is not someone who wears his age on his sleeves. Rather, he treats everyone with respect and dignity and gets along well with people who are much younger than him as it does with his peers and those older than him
“May he live to the full all the days that God has apportioned to him and continue to bring glory to God through his service to God and humanity in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
In his remarks on the occasion, Deacon Belo quipped, “I don’t feel 80.”
He gave glory to God for his journey through life and said he was honoured and grateful at being able to serve. He was appreciative of all who turned out to celebrate him.
Prayers were offered for the celebrant and his family.
The day’s celebrations moved from the Thanksgiving and Appreciation service at Good News Baptist Church, Surulere to a reception at Harbour Point Event Centre in Victoria Island.
