Ahead Christmas: Group urges vigilante law for increased security

Mr. Olatokunbo Folayan, the district commander of the Vigilance Group of Nigeria (VGN), has asked people of Ikorodu and other areas of Lagos to practise security awareness before, during, and after the holiday season.

Folayan made this disclosure in an interview with pressmen on Tuesday in Ikorodu.

According to him, VGN would work with other security organisations to rid the neighbourhood of crime and criminal activity and restore calm to the Ikorodu community.

“We know our people and our people also know us, we don’t go on transfer like the police who hardly have an idea of a community when newly posted.

“All VGN officers are recruited from the same community where a criminal uses as his abode. So it is easy to fish him out in case he involves in any criminal activity,” Folayan said.

The VGN Commander pleaded with the National Assembly to pass the VGN bill that was before it in order to provide a better and more efficient service to lessen crime in Lagos State and the rest of the nation.

He urged the five Local Government Area leaders and the LCDAs to assist the organisation by giving it equipment for efficient operation and service to the Ikorodu communities.

“We are already members of the security Joint Task Force (JTF) but if we are given the necessary support, we will be more effective.

“Sometimes people call us when they are in distress but without having enough gadgets to combat the situation, our efforts will be fruitless.

“Our officers and members are in every local government of Lagos State, therefore, the councils should support us so that insecurity in Ikorodu and Lagos State will be a thing of the past,” he said.
