The renovation of 12 terminal buildings at domestic airports across the country has been completed, according to Sen. Hadi Sirika, the Minister of Aviation.
Sirika made the statement in an interview with journalists on Monday in Abuja,
He stated that the 12 domestic airport terminal buildings in Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Owerri, Ilorin, Ibadan, Calabar, Akure, Maiduguri, and Yola are among those undergoing renovation.
According to him, the project was a part of the federal government’s commitment to modernising and making all airports in the nation environmentally friendly.
Sirika claimed that the government was stepping up efforts to standardise the country’s airports in order to improve aviation safety and security.
The minister claimed that by creating perishable cargo facilities of an international grade, the government was also advancing toward increasing its agricultural sector.
According to him, the purpose of establishing regional cargo terminals is to speed up the movement of goods from production to export centres and prevent the wasting of these perishable goods.
“Currently in Nigeria, the number of airports, including those currently being developed has doubled; passenger numbers have quadrupled, other entrepreneurship, including catering and ground handling, has blossomed, the number of airlines and jobs has doubled.
“Furthermore, we have successfully debunked the gospel truth that aviation doubles every 15 years.
“With the successful implementation of the roadmap projects, our overall goal is to grow the aviation sector`s contribution from the current 0.6 per cent to five per cent (approximately 14.166 billion dollars)” he said.
