GOP wins US House majority, dividing government

It has been projected that Republicans will win the most seats in the United States Congress.

On Wednesday, Republicans gained control of the House of Representatives but Democrats maintained their hold on the Senate, setting the stage for two years of divided government under President Joe Biden.

This is not the “red wave” that the Republicans had hoped for, but it does give them enough authority to limit Biden’s agenda and open investigations that might be politically devastating to him and his family.

After more than a week of counting, Edison Research said the Republicans had gained the 218 members they needed to control the House of Representatives. The 27th California Congressional District election was the tipping point for the Republicans.

Given that former President Donald Trump has begun another run for the White House, current House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy may face an uphill battle in keeping his fractured caucus united on crucial issues like funding the government and the military.

“Americans are ready for a new direction, and House Republicans are ready to deliver,” McCarthy said on Twitter.

The defeat diminishes Biden’s influence in Washington, but on Wednesday he complimented McCarthy and promised to work with his political opponents to get things done.

“The American people want us to get things done for them,” Biden said in a statement.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement House Democrats “will continue to play a leading role in supporting President Biden’s agenda – with strong leverage over a scant Republican majority.”

Several far-right Republican candidates, many of whom were Trump’s allies, have been soundly rejected by voters, providing a boost to the Democrats. These candidates include Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania’s Senate race, Doug Mastriano for governor, and Blake Masters for the Senate in Arizona.

Conservatives are unwavering in their goals despite the fact that the predicted “red wave” of House Republicans never materialised.

Democrats are planning to probe Biden administration officials, President Obama’s son Hunter’s business contacts with China and other countries, and maybe Biden himself in punishment for the two impeachment attempts Republicans made against Trump.

If the Republicans take control of Congress, they may try to reduce U.S. military and economic aid to Ukraine while it fights Russian forces.
