The Nigeria Customs Service has been asked to work with the Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons to seize stray weapons that may be circulating in the nation.
The centre’s North West Coordinator, Haruna Mohammed, made the request on Thursday while paying a courtesy call to Mr. Salihu Yakubu, the Customs Area Controller for Kaduna Command.
According to Mohammed, the centre has received 700 small guns and light weapons that were collected from the zone, while the national level received 1500 weapons and 14,000 rounds of ammunition.
The coordinator noted that the Customs Service had a significant role in obtaining the weapons and stated the visit was intended to fortify ties between the two organisations.
The customs controller responded by promising that the agency will keep collaborating with the centre to combat the spread of small guns and light weapons in the nation.
In order to protect the nation’s economy and security, Yakubu added that the command would continue to deal with any smuggling activities in its area of responsibility.
President Muhammadu Buhari founded the centre on November 3, 2021, in order to make Nigeria an illegal-weapons-free society.
Its mandate includes preventing and controlling the use of small arms and light weapons to improve Nigeria’s security and peace.
