US authorises exit of non-emergency personnel from Nigeria

Due to the increased risk of terrorist attacks in Nigeria, the U.S. State Department approved on Tuesday that non-emergency U.S. government workers and their families should leave the country.

The most recent travel information comes after the United States and the United Kingdom issued a Sunday warning about a potential terrorist assault in the capital Abuja, targetting, among other things, government facilities, houses of worship, and schools.

“The U.S. Embassy Abuja continues to have limited ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Nigeria,” the State Department said.

The United States has previously issued similar warnings, according to Nigeria’s Department of State Services, which warned Nigerians to stay vigilant.

The majority of Nigerian states are plagued by insecurity, which is a big concern for voters who will select a new president in February.
