Estate agent charged for bilking clients of N4m

Olasukanmi Adebanjo, a 40-year-old estate agent, was charged on Friday in a Lagos courtroom for allegedly defrauding two people looking for housing out of N4 million.

Adebanjo, who resides in Magodo Phase II, Lagos, was accused of fraud and theft by the police.

He entered a not-guilty plea to the charge.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Bassey, the defendant committed the crime in January 2021 in Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos State.

According to Bassey, the defendant got N2 million from Adejoke Oladipupo under the guise of paying the landlady’s rent for a full year.

According to him, the defendant leased the identical apartment to Mariam Odunaye, a different complaint, after failing to lease it to the original complainant.

According to the prosecutor, sections 287 and 314 of the 2015 Lagos State Criminal Law were violated.

Stealing is punishable by a three-year prison sentence under Section 287 while obtaining with false pretences is subject to a 15-year sentence under Section 314.

The defendant was given bail in the amount of N1,000,000 with two surgeries in the same amount by the magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Daodu.

The surety, according to Daodu, must be in a position to earn a living and provide proof of paying taxes to the government of Lagos State. The case was postponed until November 7 for mention.
