Austin Anthony, 42, was charged at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for allegedly hitting his wife and breaking their three-month-old child’s arm.
The defendant, a baker from Lagos State, is being prosecuted for assault, causing great bodily harm, and endangering life. His address is 16 Ajibade Street, Baruwa Ipaja.
The offences were perpetrated on September 8 in the defendant’s home, according to the prosecutor, ASP Raji Akeem.
According to Akeem, the defendant and his wife Ifeyinwa got into an argument over the man’s refusal to embrace his duties as a husband and the father of their children.
Akeem claimed that the defendant forcibly pulled their three-month-old baby from the mother’s back, causing the infant’s arm to dislocate in the process.
The defendant allegedly assaulted the plaintiff and forced her to the ground from a storey-high building, according to the prosecution.
“This caused her legs to be broken and she sustained severe injuries on her body,” he said.
Akeem added that the accused made a knife-wielding death threat on his wife.
The prosecution claims that the offences violate Sections 56, 172, 245 and 246 of the Lagos State Criminal Laws from 2015.
However, the defendant entered a not-guilty plea to the accusations.
The defendant was granted N500,000 bail with two sureties in the same amount by the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B. O. Osunsanmi.
The case was postponed till November 2 for mention by Osunsanmi.
