The Federal High Court in Lagos Wednesday, sentenced two men, Ajibade Ismail Adio and Adewumi John Olorode, to two years imprisonment for foreign currency counterfeiting.
Justice Tijjani Ringim convicted the duo following their plea of guilty to a two-count amended charge of being in possession of 165 pieces of fake $100 and 139 pieces of fake 10, 000 bills of the CFA Franc.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which arraigned them, told the court that they were arrested by the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Services (NCS) on April 15, 2022, in one of the country’s land borders in Ogun State.
Prosecution counsel Samuel Daji said the duo was in possession of the foreign currencies numbered PE81052313B and 21233443907A, with an intent that it may in any way be used as genuine.
According to him, the offences contravened sections 456 and 467 (2)(g) of the Criminal Code Act, 2004.
Following their guilty plea, their counsel Abimbola Akinsanya and Patience Amadi, prayed the court to temper justice, noting that they had entered a plea bargain arrangement with the government.
Justice Ringim sentenced each convict to one year imprisonment on each count.
The judge ordered that the jail terms would run concurrently and from the date each man was arrested.
