Over 40 teachers in Lagos have received training from the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) on plastic waste management to ensure environmental sustainability .
The training, which is part of the ‘Clean Our World’ project, is an initiative of Oando Foundation and funded by Sumitomo Chemicals, Japan.
NCF Head of Environmental Education, Mrs Abidemi Balogun, said that the training was aimed at empowering teacher and community members on turning waste into something useful.
“We are trying to let them know that they can make something useful from nylons instead of discarding it.
“With this, we are trying to save the environment and also empower them to be more beneficial to their community,” she said.
She said the initiative, which started two years ago, had trained no fewer than 500 people in plastic waste management.
“Here today, we have about 50 teachers and community members being trained which will then train their students and their various community members,” she said.
The Founder, Plastic Evolution Initiative, Mrs Mary Otorukiri-hart, said she was passionate about clean environment, hence, the initiative.
“I see a lot of waste in the environment and our environment is not clean so I wanted to do something to clean up Nigeria.
“I decided to teach people what to do to what they think is waste which is using nylons to make bags and many more,” she said.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Akinyemi Waheed, said that he had benefited immensely from the initiative and gave an assurance he would teach his community members.
Another beneficiary, Mr Shakirudeen Sanusi, an Islamic teacher in Dele Ajomale Primary school, Ilasamaja, praised the initiators of the programme.
He further said that he would pass on the knowledge he had received his students after the training. (NAN)
