Telecom giant, MTN Nigeria Communications plans to pump over N600bn into network infrastructure across Nigeria over the next three years.
The move is expected to improve telecommunications services across the country.
This was revealed by the Chairman of MTN Nigeria Communications, Dr Ernest Ndukwe, at the company’s 20th anniversary celebration held in Lagos on Sunday.
Ndukwe stated that MTN was committed to specifically expanding its rural connectivity to reach areas that were under-served across the country.
He said, “We plan to connect approximately 1000 rural communities to our network this year with an additional 2000 communities in 2022,”
Expressing optimism about what the future holds for Nigeria’s digital economy, Ndukwe said MTN looked forward to building it together with all its stakeholders.
In his speech during the event, Chief Executive Officer of the company, Karl Toriola, revealed the company’s planned participation in the restoration and rehabilitation of the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway through the Federal Government’s Road Infrastructure Tax Credit ((RITC) Scheme.
He said this was in response to the government’s drive towards public-private partnership in the rehabilitation of critical road infrastructure in Nigeria.
MTN Nigeria began operations on 8th August 2001, becoming the biggest telecom service provider by connecting about 69 million people in communities across the country.
It currently connects over 10,000 villages and communities in 223 cities and towns, in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
