Books by outgoing pastor unveiled as GNBC marks 42 years, names new leader

A collection of Christian books authored by the outgoing pastor of Good News Baptist Church, Surulere, including a twelve-volume sermon series and three theological titles, was unveiled on Sunday, February 1, 2026, during the church’s 42nd anniversary thanksgiving service.

The unveiling took place at a service that also marked a major transition in the life of the church, as it was the final service officiated by the pastor-author, Rev. Dr. Kayode Ilupeju, ahead of his retirement scheduled for February 6, 2026.

During the service, Rev. Ilupeju delivered a brief exhortation before offering prayers for the congregation and formally introducing the new pastor, Rev. Dr. John Ojo, who had previously served as the church’s Minister in Charge of Education.

The book unveiling segment began with a short presentation by the publisher, Nkanu Egbe, who explained that the books were drawn from sermons preached and academic research conducted by Rev. Ilupeju over several decades, and were published to preserve and make accessible a lifetime of teaching and ministry.

Three reviewers — Isaac Alofoje, Timothy Zwingina, and Oyinkro Olobio — later shared reflections on the books, highlighting their usefulness for personal devotion, leadership training, and theological reflection.

A prayer of dedication was offered by Deacon O. K. Belo, a major supporter of the book project, before a ceremonial unveiling was conducted by Deaconess Joan Ayo.

The publications include the twelve-volume Sermon Notes Series, curated from over 500 sermons preached by Rev. Ilupeju, as well as three additional titles — Faith in Practice, Fulfilling the Great Commission, and Peace in the Pews — adapted from his academic dissertation research and rewritten for a wider church audience.

Church members described the occasion as both celebratory and reflective, noting the rare convergence of a church anniversary, a pastoral transition, and the unveiling of a significant body of authored work within a single service.

With the event, Good News Baptist Church not only marked 42 years of ministry in Surulere, but also honoured the teaching legacy of its outgoing pastor while formally ushering in a new phase of leadership.
