Rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong demands probe into alleged extra-judicial killings by suspended Lagos aide

Prominent human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the alarming confession of extra-judicial killings made by Wale Ajetunmobi, a recently suspended aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Effiong’s demand was made public through a tweet directed at the Governor, urging law enforcement agencies to take swift action.

In his tweet, Effiong stated, “Suspending Wale Ajetunmobi as your aide does not address the alarming confession of extra-judicial killings made by him. This matter has to be investigated thoroughly by law enforcement agencies. He should be taken into custody immediately.”

Ajetunmobi, who served as the Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, was suspended following his controversial comments on social media. He confessed that individuals involved in the arson attack on TVC News station during the #EndSARS protests were tracked and assassinated. “Wale confessed in clear terms that those who burnt TVC News station at CMD Road, Ikosi, Lagos were trailed and assassinated,” Effiong highlighted.

The lawyer emphasised the need for transparency from the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Police Command. “The Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Police Command have to come clean on this matter,” Effiong insisted. He questioned the whereabouts and identities of the suspects arrested in connection with the arson, asking, “Where are the suspects or persons arrested in connection with the arson? What are their names? Has anyone been charged with the arson committed at TVC station?”

Effiong expressed his concern over the lack of information regarding the fate of those who attacked TVC News. “I have been wondering why there is no news on the fate of those who attacked TVC News. Now that the suspended aide of the Lagos State Governor has confessed that the suspects were murdered, the public deserves answers,” he said.

The lawyer underscored the importance of the judiciary in determining the guilt of individuals accused of crimes, stating, “We cannot tolerate a situation where the government or those sympathetic to the government or the political class will act as executioners. The judiciary is the sole constitutional authority empowered to determine the guilt of anyone accused of a crime.”

Effiong’s call for an investigation has sparked significant public interest and debate, with many Nigerians demanding accountability and justice for the alleged extra-judicial killings.
