Medical students rescued after kidnapping in Benue

A group of 20 students from the University of Maiduguri and University of Jos have been safely rescued following a kidnapping incident in Benue State. The students were abducted on August 15 while travelling to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) Convention.

According to the Benue State Police Command, the students were released on Friday evening. “The victims have been released. Details will be released tomorrow (Saturday) morning please,” said the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Sewuese Anene, in a statement.

The kidnapping prompted a swift response from the security forces. The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olukayode Egbetokun, deployed a tactical squad to the area and ordered the Commissioner of Police in Benue to relocate to Oturkpo. A combined team of security operatives, coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, carried out the rescue operation.

The release of the students has brought relief to their families and friends, who had been anxiously awaiting their safe return. While the specific details of the rescue operation remain unclear, the successful outcome attests to the efforts of the security forces.
