Olympic gold medalist, Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, has called for more sensitisation of rural dwellers on the novel coronavirus pandemic as a strategy to curb its spread.Ajunwa-Opara, Nigeria’s first Olympic medalist, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos that the increased sensitisation had become necessary to guide rural dwellers on the preventive measures.
“This may sound funny, but the truth is that many people in remote areas such as villages don’t believe that coronavirus is real; they still move around.
“It is so unfortunate because they are acting in ignorance; so, it is essential to take more information on COVID-19 to them and let them know the danger and the precautionary measures.
“The tier of government at that level should take up the responsibility to effectively carry out the campaign,” she said.
She added that adequate arrangements should be put in place to provide face masks and hand sanitisers for the people for usage.
The Olympic gold medalist also said that emphasis should be placed on social distancing and staying as home.
“They should be made to know that it is important to stay safe, regularly wash their hands and wear face masks,” she added.
Ajunwa-Opara expressed sadness at the increasing rate of COVID-19 infections in the country and hoped that an end would come soon. (NAN)
