LONDON, July 13, 2025 – Former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away in London, according to a statement released this afternoon by his family spokesperson, Garba Shehu.
The terse announcement, issued via social media, reads: “INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHI RAJI’UN. The family has announced the passing of the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon, in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 following a coup d’état, and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
A retired Major General in the Nigerian Army, Buhari was known for his strong anti-corruption stance, austere personal lifestyle, and efforts to restructure the Nigerian economy. His eight-year civilian presidency was marked by a mix of acclaim and criticism, particularly over security challenges, economic volatility, and persistent concerns about his health, which frequently took him abroad for medical attention.
Reactions to his death have begun pouring in from across Nigeria and around the world, with tributes expected from political leaders, diplomats, and citizens reflecting on his decades-long impact on the nation.
Details regarding funeral arrangements and national honours are yet to be announced.
