The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed the Mega Plaza Shopping Mall on Breadfruit Street, Lagos Island, for discharging untreated wastewater into public drains. This action underscores the agency’s commitment to maintaining credible and sustainable wastewater management practices across the state.
According to the LSWMO, the property was found pumping untreated wastewater into public drains at night, polluting the environment and endangering public health. “This discharge exposes citizens to communicable diseases and contaminates roads, drains, and lagoons,” explained the General Manager, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi. Enforcement and Compliance officers, after thorough nighttime surveillance, documented the violation through photographic evidence before sealing the property.
Engr. Afolabi reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental pollution, citing the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. “We are resolute in our mission to ensure a clean and healthy environment for the citizens of Lagos State,” he said. The General Manager warned that properties violating environmental laws would face strict sanctions.
The LSWMO’s decisive action reflects its dedication to public health and environmental sustainability, ensuring that Lagosians enjoy a cleaner, safer urban environment.
