The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into an incident involving a police officer and an elderly woman, which was captured in a widely circulated video. The altercation reportedly occurred in the Alagbado area earlier this month.
The video, which went viral on social media, shows the officer manhandling the elderly woman inside her car. According to witnesses, the officer demanded ₦250,000 from the woman, which she refused to pay, leading to the confrontation.
“The command condemns the unprofessional conduct of the inspector as it does not represent the ethics and operational standards of the Nigeria Police Force,” said Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson in Lagos. “We assure the public that the investigation will be swift, thorough, and conclusive.”
The officer involved, along with his supervising deputy superintendent, has been brought in for questioning. The Lagos State Police Command has also established contact with the elderly woman to gather more details about the incident.
“We will ensure that the officers are disciplined as appropriate, and members of the public are updated accordingly,” Hundeyin added. “This kind of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
Human rights organisations have expressed their concern over the incident, calling for transparency and accountability in the investigation. “The rights of citizens must be protected, and any abuse of power by law enforcement officers should be addressed promptly,” said a spokesperson for the Lagos Human Rights Commission.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many Lagosians demanding justice for the elderly woman and stricter measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
