Legal Luminary Prof. Epiphany Azinge emerges as 14th Asagba of Asaba

In a historic announcement on Sunday, the Asaba traditional council, Asagba-in-Council, declared Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), a prominent legal scholar, as the 14th Asagba (King) of Asaba. The appointment of Prof. Azinge, who holds the esteemed traditional title of Okilolo of Asaba, marks a new chapter in the leadership of the Delta State capital.

Chief Anthony Edozien, the Ochendo of Asaba, made the announcement on behalf of the council, emphasizing that the selection process adhered strictly to the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict of 1979, as applicable in Delta State. “The selection was conducted in line with our established traditions, ensuring a fair and representative choice,” Chief Edozien noted.

The five Ebo’s (Quarters) of Asaba, with the support of the Iyagba quarters, unanimously endorsed Prof. Azinge as the 14th Asagba of Asaba, leading to his official confirmation by the ruling council. “His selection was a unifying decision by the quarters, reflecting his deep connection to the community and his exemplary leadership,” added Edozien.

Prof. Azinge, a former Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), was chosen from a distinguished pool of 10 contenders for the royal stool. Among the notable candidates were Mr. Tony Ogugia Konwea, Prof. Emmanuel Onwuka, and Chief Chinedu Esealuka. The selection of Prof. Azinge comes after the passing of the 13th Asagba of Asaba, the late Prof. Chike Edozien, who died on February 14, 2024.
