In a significant boost to the Lagos Ride (Lagride) initiative, the Lagos State Government is set to receive 5,000 brand new vehicles for its taxi scheme over the next few months. This announcement was made during a partnership signing ceremony between Ibile Holdings, the investment arm of the Lagos State Government, and Chinese automobile company CIG Motors, held at the Government House, Alausa, Ikeja.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the initial batch of 2,000 vehicles will be delivered in the coming weeks, with an additional 3,000 vehicles expected thereafter. This move aims to enhance the state’s smart transport system under the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, promoting a safer and cleaner environment and mitigating the effects of climate change.
At the ceremony, attended by key officials including Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation Mr. Seun Osiyemi, and representatives from CIG Motors, it was highlighted that no fewer than 1,000 of the 5,000 vehicles will be Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles. This development is intended to phase out rickety cars currently used as taxis in Lagos, replacing them with modern, environmentally friendly alternatives.
The Lagos Ride Scheme operates on a “lease-to-own” model, enabling drivers to own their taxis after three to four years of full payments. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that this initiative not only modernizes the transport sector but also generates employment opportunities, particularly for the youth, and stimulates the local economy.
“We are happy that the assembly line is functioning and working well here in the heart of Ikeja. This will begin to change the carbon footprint that we have been talking about,” Sanwo-Olu remarked. He further noted that the government’s collaboration with CIG Motors is expected to inject over $200 million into the economy, creating numerous jobs.
Mr. Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation, expressed optimism that the new fleet will provide safe and smart transport options for residents. Diana Chen, Chairman of CIG, commended the Lagos State Government for its substantial investment and assured continued support in providing employment for Lagos youths.
The Lagos Ride Scheme is part of the state government’s broader efforts to establish an integrated urban mass transportation system, leveraging public-private partnerships to drive development and sustainability.
