A 43-year-old hotel cashier, Tiamiyu Ayanbode, was brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, facing allegations of embezzling N6.7 million from his employer. Residing in Agege, Lagos, Ayanbode stands accused of theft, to which he has entered a plea of not guilty.
“In the period between October 2023 and January, at the Lagos Airport Hotel in Ikeja, the defendant allegedly committed the offence,” stated prosecutor Insp Felicia Okwori. The revelation came to light following an audit of the company’s accounts, which identified a shortfall of N6,710,000.00. “As the individual responsible for the funds, Mr. Ayanbode was unable to provide an explanation for the missing amount,” added Okwori.
The alleged theft is in violation of section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Magistrate Mrs. O. O Fagbohun has set the defendant’s bail at N1 million, along with two sureties matching the bail amount. The case has been postponed until April 12 for further mention.
