In a subdued Spanish Super Cup semi-final in Saudi Arabia, Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal secured a 2-0 victory for Barcelona over Osasuna on Thursday.
The result paves the way for a highly anticipated final clash with Real Madrid on Sunday, reminiscent of last year’s final, which Barcelona won 3-1.
Barcelona struggled in the first half, dominating possession but lacking creativity and posing a minimal threat to Osasuna. Lewandowski had a couple of half-chances thwarted by a confident Osasuna goalkeeper, Sergio Herrera.
“It was not until the 59th minute that Barca came to life and managed to break the deadlock,” Xavi Hernandez, Barcelona manager, noted.
Ilkay Gundogan’s precise through-ball found Lewandowski, who capitalized on the opportunity to score from close range. Despite Osasuna players’ protests of a foul on Jose Arnaiz in the build-up, VAR confirmed the goal.
Osasuna manager Jagoba Arrasate expressed frustration, stating, “We felt we were wronged because the refereeing criteria were very different during the whole match. The foul was clear.”
Xavi Hernandez acknowledged the controversy, saying, “Watching live, it looked like a foul, to be honest, but the replay shows that there was nothing.”
After Lewandowski’s goal, Xavi brought Joao Felix off the bench, adding impetus to Barcelona’s attack. Joao Felix’s contribution forced goalkeeper Herrera to make key saves, keeping Osasuna in contention.
Joao Felix played a crucial role in a swift counter-attack, providing the assist to Yamal, who secured the win by blasting the ball low into the net.
Barcelona’s victory sets the stage for an El Clasico final against Real Madrid. Xavi expressed optimism, stating, “You don’t play finals; you win them. Hopefully, the final will go our way like last year. We are the reigning champions, and at least we will enjoy it.”
