Block the streets with your ‘Owambe’ party and you’d be arrested, warns Lagos State Taskforce

Lagos is putting its foot down on street parties! The Lagos State Taskforce is on a mission: no more blocking inner streets for celebrations. They’re serious about this too—ready to haul anyone doing this off to court.

CSP Shola Jejeloye, the task force’s Chairman, didn’t mince words. He called out the “selfish” and “inconsiderate” behaviour of people turning streets into party venues, causing chaos and headaches for others. Imagine your road suddenly becoming a dancefloor—it might sound fun, but it’s not fair to everyone else.

He warned folks against this trend, saying, “It’s the height of irresponsibility.” He’s not bluffing either; if caught, you’re heading straight to the mobile court.

According to Jejeloye, “Cordoning off entire streets for private celebrations is unacceptable. It leads to noise pollution and severe traffic congestion, causing immense inconvenience to others.” He warned of swift legal action, stating, “Those engaging in such actions will be promptly arrested and brought before the mobile court.”

Jejeloye highlighted the hotspots—Lagos Island, Oworonshoki, and Agege—where these shenanigans are rampant. The task force plans to keep a close eye on these areas, stepping up surveillance to put a lid on these disruptive street events.

They already crashed a birthday bash in Yaba, where the whole road was taken over, slowing traffic to a crawl. That, according to the task force, was a clear no-no.

But they’re not the fun police entirely. There are places, officially approved by the government, where parties are welcome. However, there’s a catch—you’ve got to get the green light from the right people and show it to the task force before you party hard.

Jejeloye ended on a note of cooperation, asking the public to report any street-blocking party incidents. It’s all about keeping things in check and making sure everyone gets to use the road without feeling like they’re gate-crashing someone’s party.

The Taskforce isn’t kidding around, and with this new crackdown, they’re aiming to bring order back to the streets of Lagos.
