In a groundbreaking stride toward gender inclusivity, the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) has unveiled a pioneering initiative that offers a fresh horizon of opportunities for women to thrive within the oil and gas sector. The NGA’s recently established Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Study Group is set to not only redefine norms but also to lay bare the pertinent challenges, opportunities, and crucial matters existing within the industry.
Intimately aligned with the NGA’s resolute mission, the DEI Study Group has forged a strategic alliance with the Women In Energy Network (WIEN), heralding a transformative era that amplifies the voices of women while carving out a path for their triumphant career journeys. Engr Chichi Emenike, a stalwart of the Women In Energy Network, takes the reins as Chairperson of the DEI Study Group, joined by Mrs. Eyono Fatayi-Williams, the Vice President of Gas for WIEN, as Vice Chairperson. Drawing upon WIEN’s extensive network and unwavering commitment to empowerment, this partnership strives to remodel the energy sector into a realm that radiates both equity and diversity.
At its core, the DEI Study Group envisions a multifaceted strategy to realise its ambitions. A central facet involves the impetus for industry stakeholders to foster a greater number of internship avenues tailored to women. This strategic manoeuvre is primed to furnish women with hands-on experience, facilitating their substantial contributions to the industry’s trajectory. Furthermore, the group is steadfast in its commitment to kindling early-stage involvement of young girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. This strategic move is poised to bolster the pipeline of accomplished women in technical roles, thereby laying the groundwork for an enhanced framework of diversity, equity, and inclusion metrics in the sector over the long term.
In an amalgamation of collective wisdom, resources, and networks, this partnership stands as an instrumental vehicle to propel diversity, equity, and inclusion within the energy sector. Through the dynamic fusion of WIEN’s vibrant community and the NGA’s distinguished industry leadership, the shared aspiration is to evoke transformative change. The aim is to bridge gender divides, cultivate parity, and elevate the pivotal role of women in shaping the energy sector’s dynamic landscape.
