The Lagos branch of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) issued a heartfelt call for unity and camaraderie among Nigerians during a cultural celebration on Thursday. At the inaugural cultural day event organised as part of the 2023 Press Week, Mr. Ajayi Adeleye, the council’s chairman, emphasised the importance of fostering love and harmony within the country.
The event, hosted in Ikeja, witnessed journalists from diverse ethnic backgrounds proudly donning their vibrant cultural attire, engaging in spirited dances, and melodies, and sharing delectable traditional dishes. Amidst this festive atmosphere, media representatives from different outlets embraced the cultural exchange by swapping meals, while people mingled freely between tents, forging connections.
Ajayi underscored the council’s decision to infuse culture into their annual media gathering, aiming to bolster unity among journalists.
“The essence of this programme is to promote the unity of various tribes despite our differences. Everyone is rejoicing, dining, and relishing dishes from every corner of the country. Each person should feel free to indulge in whatever culinary delight they desire from any station. We are one family,” Ajayi stated.
He urged the union to ensure the event’s continuation, while also appealing to Nigerians in the diaspora to unite in the nation’s development efforts. With a renewed government vision in place, Ajayi encouraged those abroad to return with fresh ideas and investments, contributing to the nation’s rejuvenated aspirations.
“As Nigerians, we must look out for each other; we must stand united. Our home is none other than Nigeria,” he affirmed, highlighting the achievements of his administration. He committed to inaugurating the union’s guest house in Somolu by September.
High Chief Sunday Ossai, President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Lagos State, echoed the call for unity, urging Nigerians to transcend divisive politics.
“Politics should never be allowed to fracture our unity. Regardless of the circumstances, we must not let politics tear us apart,” Ossai implored.
Participating in the traditional kola nut-breaking ritual and leading an Igbo cultural dance session, Ossai emphasised that elections had concluded, and it was time for all factions to embrace healing and solidarity.
Accompanied by Eze Uche Digba, the Eze Ndigbo of Ikeja, Ossai highlighted the necessity of fostering love and harmony among Nigerians.
The event also encompassed an array of activities, including a media march past, dance and singing competitions, featuring cash rewards for winners. Distinguished traditional leaders from various ethnic groups and NUJ executives from Zone B, under the direction of Vice President South West, Mrs. Ronke Shamo, graced the occasion.
