Lagos Building Agency demolishes contravening 5-floor structure

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has initiated the removal of a five-storey building situated at 7, BreadFruit Street on Lagos Island due to violations of construction regulations. In a statement released on Monday, Mr. Gbolahan Oki, General Manager of LASBCA, announced the development.

The statement was issued by Mrs. Adetayo Akitoye-Asagba, Assistant Director of Public Affairs at LASBCA. Oki highlighted that the demolition forms part of a wider strategy to combat illegal construction, mitigate the risk of building collapses, and ensure public safety.

Oki revealed that the property owner had failed to obtain necessary approvals from the agency, contravening the legal requirements for construction projects throughout the state. Despite receiving warnings and notices to halt construction, the developer disregarded these directives.

The general manager cited records indicating that a development permit request by the developer had been declined, as the area in question fell within government land overseen by the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency.

Oki underscored the agency’s unwavering commitment to enforcing building construction protocols to guarantee the safety of residents’ lives and property. He reassured the people of Lagos that the agency remains dedicated to certifying all new buildings across the state as suitable for habitation.

He appealed to property owners and developers to consistently adhere to the state’s building codes.
