In a significant commitment to empowering Nigerian women and youth, Google has unveiled plans to train 20,000 individuals in digital skills while also extending a substantial grant of 1.2 billion naira ($1.6 million) to support the government’s ambitious target of generating one million digital jobs across the country. This announcement was made by Google’s Africa executives on Tuesday.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, during a meeting with Google Africa executives in Abuja, highlighted Nigeria’s determination to create digital employment opportunities for its burgeoning youth population. Although Shettima did not specify a precise timeline for the job creation initiative, he emphasised the alignment of Google’s efforts with the government’s objective to enhance youth engagement in the digital economy.
This transformative endeavour will be made possible through a collaborative effort, as Google Africa executives detailed a partnership involving a grant from Google’s philanthropic arm. This partnership, in conjunction with Data Science Nigeria and the Creative Industry Initiative for Africa, will play a pivotal role in facilitating the programme’s implementation.
Shettima underlined that Google’s proactive initiative is well-matched with the government’s dedication to elevating youth involvement in the burgeoning digital landscape. Additionally, he revealed that the government is working in collaboration with the nation’s banking sector to drive the project forward.
Olumide Balogun, Google’s director for West Africa, underscored the multifaceted nature of the company’s commitment.
