‘The Initiatives’ Applaud 10th Senate’s Autonomy

The College of Serving and Former Federal Lawmakers, operating as ‘The Initiatives,’ has lauded the inaugural strides of the 10th Senate, asserting that this upper chamber is far from being a mere rubber-stamp legislature.

Contrary to apprehensions that the Senate, led by Godswill Akpabio, might serve as a mere extension of the executive branch, the group expressed its endorsement. Eseme Eyiboh, Dean of the Faculty Board at The Initiatives, conveyed this sentiment during a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, where he provided insights into the Senate’s activities over the past two months.

He remarked, “In the wake of this new leadership in the National Assembly, speculations emerged that the Senate would surrender its autonomy. However, the series of decisions made thus far belie that notion and demonstrate a more promising outlook for Nigerians under Akpabio’s stewardship.”

Eyiboh highlighted the Senate’s praiseworthy stances, particularly its handling of the presidential request for troop deployment to Niger Republic. He emphasized, “A remarkable testament to ethical integrity emerged when the President forwarded the troop deployment request to the Senate. While many anticipated a mere formality, today we proudly observe that this Senate not only critically examined the matter but actively advocated for the exhaustive exploration of diplomatic avenues.”

“The decisive halt to the proposed surge in electricity tariffs, among other commendable actions, underscored the Senate’s resolute commitment to collaborating with the executive branch in alleviating the challenges faced by Nigerians,” Eyiboh asserted.

He went on to applaud other noteworthy actions of the Senate, such as deferring the confirmation of three ministerial nominees and intervening to resolve recent labor disputes. Eyiboh urged, “We therefore beseech Nigerians to grant them the benefit of doubt and rally behind the Senate’s leadership under Akpabio, with the collective aim of fostering the welfare of all.”

The Initiatives functions as the registered trustee for both current and former members of the National Assembly, facilitating public policy initiatives that seek to bridge the divide between leaders and the populace.
