England forward Lauren James has been banned for two games after stamping on Nigeria player Michelle Alozie in the Women’s World Cup last 16.
The 21-year-old Chelsea player received a red card for the incident in the 87th minute of Monday’s match in Brisbane, which England went on to win on penalties after the match was drawn 0-0 after extra time.
James, England’s top scorer at the tournament with three goals, will miss Saturday’s quarter-final against Colombia and any potential semi-final if England qualifies.
She has apologised for the incident, saying it was “out of character”.
The Football Association (FA) has declined to comment on the suspension.
James’s ban is a blow to England’s hopes of winning the World Cup. She is one of the team’s most talented players and her absence will be felt.
However, England has a strong squad and will be confident of overcoming Colombia without her. They will be hoping that James is available for the semi-final if they reach it.
The incident is a reminder of the importance of discipline in football. James’s red card was a costly mistake and she will now pay the price.
