A two-storey building holding the Onitsha main market Police Station and stores selling lace fabrics was destroyed by fire on Tuesday early in the morning.
Firefighters fought for hours to put out the fire while some traders managed to save their wares and others stood aside helplessly by as their stores were destroyed.
Firefighters and police officers are on the scene putting out the fire and preventing theft, according to DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesman for the Anambra Command of the Police.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that efforts to get the reaction of the Director, Anambra Fire Service, Mr Martin Agbili, was unsuccessful as he neither answered calls nor replied the text messages sent to his cell phone.
