Lagos school bus somersaults, injuring children

A school bus in Lagos carrying children between the ages of one and five suffered a somersault, injuring everyone on board on Thursday.

The accident happened early in the day in Surulere.

The bus with the licence plate KTU-465DN reportedly struck a median barrier and tore off a piece of concrete holding a traffic light before somersaulting, according to a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who witnessed the accident.

The injured youngsters and a carer were transported to the neighbouring Topaz Hospital by sympathisers who arrived quickly at the incident.

The bus’s injured driver, who also fled the scene, reportedly feared being attacked by a mob.

Medical professionals at the Topaz Hospital attended to the injured right away.

Dr Sanusi Olatunbosun, who was on duty, later told NAN, “Seven people were in the school bus, three had serious injuries while four had minor injuries.”

According to Olatunbosun, each victim received medical attention and was subjected to a two-hour observation period before being released.

He said that the hospital had expected payment from the school to cover medical expenses.

“They are all conscious and discharged in good condition,” he said.

Olatunbosun stated that he gave the school the advice to instruct the parents to keep a tight eye on their children and to report any symptoms, such as weakness, tiredness, dizziness, or oversleeping.

In an effort to reduce a traffic hold-up, some teenagers at the accident pulled the school bus out of the way from middle of the road.
