The family of Ismaila Abubakar, also known as Ismaila Mabo and a former coach of the Super Falcons women’s football team from Nigeria, has received condolences from President Muhammadu Buhari.
The president joined the family in grieving their husband and father, who passed away on Monday at the age of 80, in a statement released on Monday in Abuja by his media assistant, Malam Garba Shehu.
Mabo was a seasoned football manager who is credited with working with and managing some of the most brilliant female footballers in Nigerian history.
He made his name as a player and captain of the Mighty Jets of Jos and also represented the nation as a fearsome central defender with the Green Eagles. He was also a legendary footballer in the domestic league.
For the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 2000 Summer Olympics, and the 2004 Summer Olympics, he served as the team’s head coach.
The president claims that Mabo’s impact will endure in the players, coaches, and young athletes who interacted with him throughout his career and who will be motivated by his leadership qualities in the years to come.
The president hoped that those in mourning might be blessed by the memories of the deceased.
