Goncalo Ramos, who replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal’s starting lineup, scored a spectacular hat-trick to capture the headlines as Portugal easily qualified for the quarter-finals with a 6-1 victory against Switzerland.
Ramos started the score before Pepe put Portugal ahead before the interval. Ramos added his second and Portugal’s third goal after the break, with Raphael Guerreiro collecting the fourth. Switzerland’s Manuel Akanji scored a consolation goal, but any dreams of a late comeback were dashed when Ramos struck his third goal of the night to complete a remarkable hat-trick.
To make matters worse for Switzerland, Rafael Leao scored Portugal’s sixth goal of the night in extra time.
Pepe’s goal makes him the second oldest player (39 years and 283 days) to score at the tournament.
