21-year-old ‘one-way’ driver arraigned for manslaughter in Lagos

Shola Yusuf, a 21-year-old driver, on Friday, appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for reportedly driving in a reckless manner and killing a pedestrian.

Mr. Yusuf, whose address was not provided, was charged by the police with four counts bordering on reckless driving and manslaughter.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Inspector Courage Ekhueorohan, the Prosecution Counsel, informed the court that the defendant had committed the offence on August 20 at Odo-Olowu Warehouse Bus/Stop, Ijeshatedo, Surulere.

Mr. Ekhueorohan claimed that the defendant carelessly drove a tricycle with registration number: EPE 588 QK against oncoming traffic and thereby caused the death of Lukman Alabi.

He said that Mr. Alabi was rushed to the hospital after the accident and but was later confirmed dead.

Mr. Ekhueorohan also stated that the defendant drove without a valid driver’s license and the tricycle documents to show that it belonged to him.

Mr. Ekhueorohan further said that the offence broke the provisions of sections 5, 12, 51(2), and 52, of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2012.

Magistrate M. I. Dan-Oni admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mrs. Dan-Oni, adjourned the case until October 7.
