Africa Cup of Nations roundup: Celebrations turn tragic, South Africa dominates, Salah’s hamstring woes, and late drama for Zambia

In the aftermath of Guinea’s 1-0 victory over Gambia at the Africa Cup of Nations, joyous celebrations erupted across Guinea, leading to a tragic incident in which six people lost their lives. The Guinean Football Federation and the national team, led by coach Kaba Diawara, have appealed for restraint. The Federation released a video urging fans to celebrate responsibly ahead of their crucial match against Senegal. According to Amadou Makadji, the Federation’s media manager, “The goal of football is to bring joy and not leave families bereaved.” A draw against Senegal would secure Guinea’s spot in the round of 16.

In another Group E clash, South Africa displayed dominance by defeating Namibia 4-0, with Themba Zwane scoring twice. This victory boosted South Africa’s chances of advancing to the last 16. Zwane’s stellar performance, coupled with Percy Tau’s early penalty, secured a comfortable win. South Africa moved ahead of Namibia on goal difference in the standings, setting the stage for a crucial match against Tunisia.

Mohamed Salah’s hamstring injury has forced him to return to Liverpool for treatment, casting doubt on his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. Egypt’s Football Association remains hopeful of Salah’s involvement in the later stages of the tournament. Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp stated, “However long he is out, I think probably everybody sees that it makes sense that he is doing the rehab with us.” Salah, with 96 caps, is determined to contribute to Egypt’s quest for the title.

In Group F, Patson Daka’s late header secured a 1-1 draw for 10-man Zambia against Tanzania. Despite being reduced to 10 players after captain Roderick Kabwe’s dismissal, Zambia displayed resilience. The draw left Morocco at the top of the group, with Tanzania still in search of their first win. Zambia faces a challenging task against tournament favourites Morocco in their final group game.

Ivory Coast’s hopes of advancing in Group A received a boost as key players Sebastien Haller and Simon Adingra are fit again for their last group game against Equatorial Guinea. Borussia Dortmund striker Haller, recovering from an ankle injury, is expected to bolster the Ivorian attack. A win in their final group game would secure qualification for Ivory Coast.

In a Group F clash, Morocco scored early against the Democratic Republic of Congo, but a late equaliser by Silas Katompa resulted in a 1-1 draw. Achraf Hakimi’s sixth-minute goal put Morocco in the lead, but the Congolese fought back, earning a valuable point. Despite the draw, Morocco is well-positioned to progress to the last 16, while the DR Congo faces a challenging path ahead.
