Theatre boss charges budding actors to open up on challenges

Mr Victor Ashaolu, National President, Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP), has urged up and coming actors to expose the peculiar challenges they faced in the industry.

Ashaolu, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos, said that by so doing such bold steps would help the association to check the excesses of some officials.

ANTP is the umbrella body for Yoruba movie actors and actresses in Southwest Nigeria.

“The association is a big body, growing day-by-day with up and coming actors and actresses in the movie industry, and we cannot rule out that there are challenges facing the artists

“So it is on that platform that we need these future stars to respectfully approach us over areas where they are having problems to enable us to assist them.

“We are here to guide them, put them through so that they can grow and become stars in this noble career they have chosen, but they must have to open up,” he said.

According to him, it was a way to fight and achieve fundamental results that would go a long way to improve the lot of the younger practitioners, being a major issue to be addressed in the industry.

Ashaolu, a former national secretary-general of ANTP, condemned improper contracts drawn up by producers before engaging in movie shoots, saying artists should ensure they make good agreements before embarking on any project.

“I see such improper contracts as cheating and that is why some producers disagree with me when I try to defend artists that are being cheated in the industry.

“This is rather so unfortunate that even the young ones fail to understand our plans for them.

“If such issues are not properly addressed with necessary measures, it will get to a stage whereby the young artists will be the ones fighting to restore their rights,” he added.

The ANTP boss, who recently turned 70, then urged veterans, up and coming artists to embrace as well as exhibit discipline to portray the industry positively. (NAN)
