“Encouraging messages from well wishers sped up my recovery process and made my #COVID19 experience less challenging.

“Lets #TakeResponsibility #ForGreaterLagos!”

The Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, also wrote:

“It is with gratitude to God that I announce the recovery and subsequent negative test for COVID-19 of the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi.

“Following the mandatory isolation, the Commissioner took a COVID-19 PCR test which returned negative yesterday evening.

“He will be returning to his full duties gradually and remains resolute in delivering the mandate of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whom he says stood by him steadfastly in these trying times; he sincerely appreciates Mr. Governor’s gesture.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu, the Incident Commander, is excited by the news and urges Lagosians to realise that COVID-19 is still with us; they should keep obeying the guidelines – washing their hands, wearing face masks and avoiding large gatherings, among others.”

Prof. Abayomi had announced on 22nd August 2020 that he had tested positive to the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The contribution of Prof. Akin Abayomi to the Lagos State fight against the COVID-19 coronavirus has been remarkable.

With Governor Jide Sanwoolu as No. 1 incident commander, Prof. Abayomi’s contributions include the deriving of a genome sequence of the COVID-19 coronavirus from the index case, public health interventions like the statewide lockdown and the establishment of a protocol for the prevention of COVID-19 transmissions like social distancing, the use of face masks and safe hygiene habits.

The State Commissioner for Health can also be credited with the establishment of Isolation Centres for the treatment of severe positive COVID-19 coronavirus cases.

As a result, out of a state population of approximately 20 million, a modest figure of just over 18,000 COVID-19 coronavirus transmissions and 200 deaths were recorded as at Sunday.
