Managing multiple shocks will boost Africa’s economy—ECA

If the continent's numerous shocks are appropriately addressed, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) suggests that its economy might grow positively. This is contained in a press release by Mr. Adam Elhiraika, Director of the Macroeconomics and Governance Division of the ECA, during the experts meeting currently taking place in Ethiopia. Elhiraika stated that a review of recent economic and social trends in Africa by ECA focused on the complicated economic and financial picture on the combination of shocks that slowed the global economy. These shocks, according to him, included the COVID-19 pandemic's effects, an increase in prices brought on by the

Credit Suisse thrown $54 billion lifeline to avoid global bank crisis

After its shares fell, Credit Suisse said it would borrow up to $54 billion from Switzerland's central bank to boost liquidity and investor confidence. The bank's announcement in the middle of the night in Zurich boosted Credit Suisse shares 24% and helped reverse some of the stock market losses caused by investor fears of global bank runs. Since the 2008 financial crisis, Credit Suisse is the first major global bank to receive an emergency lifeline, casting doubt on central banks' ability to fight inflation with aggressive interest rate hikes. The second-largest Swiss bank said it would borrow up to 50 billion Swiss francs

The Role of Worldreader in achieving SDG 4 – Inclusive, Equitable and Quality Education: The East African Perspective

By Joan Mwachi-Amolo (Kenya) Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) aims to “ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” Among its several core targets are universal youth literacy, early childhood development, universal pre-primary, primary and secondary education, and education for sustainable development and global citizenship. To reach SDG 4, unequal access to and quality of education must be fixed, and effective and inclusive learning environments must be created. It also requires supporting teachers, educators, and families as they facilitate learning. Tackling the Global Learning Crisis: The Transformational Power of Reading Reading is the foundation of all learning.

The Role of Libraries in realising SDG 4 – Inclusive, Equitable and Quality Education: The West African Perspective

By Nkem Osuigwe Libraries exist within the formal and informal sectors of the learning ecosystem. They are very important to learning in schools and in the different communities where they live all over Africa. They are critical for achieving an inclusive, equitable, and quality education where no one is left behind including those who are in employment and cannot attend school full-time and/or are taking online courses. They are also critical for those who have fallen through the cracks of the educational system as school dropouts at various stages of their educational journey or out-of-school children. Before School Age Public libraries introduce preschool

December is not a deadline – don’t kill yourself

By Ugoma Johnson The Christmas season which is a celebration that is peculiar to December is always interesting and fun-filled. The joy of the season is such that is felt by all, including none Christians. Most businesses seem to boom more during the Christmas season and most business people always look forward to it. It is also an interesting time for employees as most organisations give a long holiday for workers to rest and have family time with their loved ones. The excitement, expectation, and joy that accompany the Christmas season are such that can hardly be compared to any other season. However, for

Thank God! I survived

A survivor's story of a pilot's plane crash experience By Tolu Ita Who would have thought that a flight that started in a clear blue sky would end up in a crash? But thank God, I survived. It was my CPL (commercial pilot licence) qualifying solo cross-country flight on September 12, 2003. I had completed the flight from Zaria to Jos, Jos to Abuja, and was on the last leg from Abuja to Zaria. Despite VFR (visual flight rules) weather in Zaria and my alternate, Kaduna, I had delayed departure for Abuja weather to improve. Tolu Soyemi (now Ita) on her way to the

The wisdom of old age

By Ugoma Johnson One of the biggest mistakes that young people, especially teenagers make sometimes is to see their parents as 'old school' to the point that they begin to think that they do not have anything to offer in this 21st century As much as I agree that most parents do not understand the dynamism of parenting the millennials, however, it will be foolish of me, or anyone for that matter to live in the delusion that the older generation is completely useless in the overall scheme of things as it relates to parenting the 21st-century child. The older generation might not
